I finally got around to finishing the material for  Connect.ed on the weekend and now my post on Wednesday. In one word WOW would be how to describe the information. There are so many different little components we need to teach to ensure our students are safe using ICTs. I really enjoyed looking through the material because it gave me ideas on how to approach some of the sensitive topics (e.g. sexting) these concepts with students and possibly parents. The materials also gave me some insight into looking within the school ICT policies (which I did on my prac). I actually used some of this information in my ICT class today, only briefly and skimming the surface but making the students aware of the ideas is key. Link to my certificate

ICT and my Year 2 students

Since I know I have been placed within a year 2 classroom I have been able to look more closely into the curriculum I need to implement while on prac. I am going to use David’s post in the book What should your students know? from week 10. 

  1. Identify what curriculum you will be using while on Professional Experience. 

The Australian Curriculum, specifically Information and Communication Technology (ICT) capability

     2. Identify what (if anything) that curriculum document has to say about what your students should be able to 

  • already do with ICTs; and,

Learning in Design and Technologies builds on concepts, skills and processes developed in the Early Years Learning Framework, revisiting, strengthening and extending these as needed.

  • what they should be able to do by the end of this year

By the end of Year 2 students will have had the opportunity to create designed solutions at least once in each of the following technologies contextsEngineering principles and systemsFood and fibre production and Food specialisations; and Materials and technologies specialisations. Students should have opportunities to experience designing and producing products, services and environments. This may occur through integrated learning.

         3. Do you Understand the expectations? Can you fulfill those expectations? Do you have the knowledge and the                  skills?

I understand the expectations to develop the children’s ICT skills. I believe I can fulfill these expectations to some extend in conjunction with my mentors assistance and actively planning for this learning. I do have the knowledge and the skills to teach and guide students to meeting learning outcomes

         4. How are you going to know exactly what your students are able to do?

By having discussions with the teacher about previous learning experiences using the computers and their skills and abilities. I will draw on prior documentation and by having discussions with student. Constant observations of the students engaging with the learning material is another method.

         5. How are you going to help them?

I am going to help the children by observing and providing scaffolding where needed. I will plan activities that are challenging but not un-achievable. I will be available for assistance when and when required and further challenging students where needed.

My Digital Foot Print

What will my employer find if they Google searched me? My stomach dropped at this thought not because of a shady history of drunken photos but rather because I wasn’t sure! 

I was shocked! After a quick google search found quiet a few things of me! 

-An old photo from myspace 

_My profile pic from Pinterest 

-My photo and  article from TAFE promo I did for the Bachelor of Education (which I ended up doing through USQ 

-And various accounts from Linked in, Pinterest and Instagram

Thank goodness through my life I haven’t posted anything I wouldn’t be comfortable and proud to show people! Being aware of my digital foot print has put me at ease but made me think where did I develop this sense of privacy?

 I don’t remember being taught it in school about what you put on the internet stays on the internet. Rather from my family I realize. My Mum and Step Dad have nagged and nagged me through my life about being respectful and careful when using social media. Thank you very much for the nagging it payed off.

To re blog or not to re blog….that is the question

It’s a hot topic within the digital spectrum of life. When working through the EDC3100 book I found myself questioning my integrity when re blogging another persons work. I see where it is a copyright issue and how people re blog to meet their target and create a fantasy of actually doing the work, but I see it as a complement and useful tool (when done right).

As an online student i LOVE reading other peoples blogs! I feel like I am not alone in this crazy Uni life where work, uni, family, friends and sleep are all smashed together into a blurry time (which is referred to as a semester on the University calendar). I see personal growth within myself and others as I read their blogs and thoughts and a kindred spirit with all my fellow students.

 I see re blogging like having a conversation AS LONG AS the re blogger comments back and shares their opinion. Re blogging is a powerful tool that needs to be done with integrity and  purpose. This is not always achievable with the internet but that’s the risk you take sharing your ideas and thoughts.

I know We are looking at interactive TVs this week but I couldn’t go past posting this find from one of my colleges. Popplet is a brainstorming app (Much like text2mindmap). The app allows the teacher to create a mind map showing the conversations. The app is very versatile and allows the teacher to change the font easily. BUT the best thing is you can draw or insert pictures within the app! So for the younger ones that can’t read this is perfect. It allows students to draw or write in their input or use photos students have taken. What an amazing app

Bring on Prac!

Finally know where I am going and a lot of my anxiety is gone. I have already contacted my mentor teacher to organize a meeting prior to commencing so I can learn a bit about the teacher’s expectations and  the children. With some prior knowledge about the class I feel I will be able to prepare myself a bit better and possibly meet a the children before I officially begin. 

I have found a great source of information from a friend also studying her Bachelor of Education. She has already done prac with the same age group I am with. I know her experience will be different to mine but having the opportunity to pick her brain about her experience has relaxed me quiet a lot. 

I am finding myself being quiet nervous as this will be my first time teaching in a school. I have been in the childcare sector for 6 years and this is where I am truly comfortable. I have not problem walking in any room within this setting and taking control when I am needed but the though of school is a bit daunting. I am sure once I meet my mentor teacher and the class I will feel much more comfotable.

Assessment 2 DONE!

I know I said I wouldn’t take the extension we were grated by David lightly but the heavy uni workload and full time work obligations things got pushed back again. But on the bright side I can proudly say I have finished my second assessment.

ICTs and education was once a scary topic for myself trying to think of all these creative and original ways to integrate ICTs but after module 2 I see the value in ICTs with a purpose. Using simple ideas like paint and Google maps is a powerful tool in its own and just because I uses it on a regular basis doesn’t mean there is no value in it for education. 

Now that I have completed assessment 2 with a renewed faith in integrating ICTs with a pedagogical framework I am happy to say bring on prac!
